The Republic of Guinea received 10 MiG-17F (NATO “FRESCO C”) fighter-bombers from the Soviet Union in the early 1960s, and for more than two decades they formed the offensive core of the Force Aérienne de Guineé. Initially based in Conakry, the FAG’s MiG-17 fleet suffered from low operability rates despite pilot and technician training in the Soviet Union. Portuguese forces attempted to destroy these fighters at Conakry airport during November 1970’s Operation Mar Verde but, unknown to the Portuguese, the MiGs had been moved to a different airfield prior to the raid.
