The 12 MiG-17PFs originally delivered in 1955 saw a long service in Bulgaria, having been retired only in 1983. The MiG-17PF is an all-weather interceptor, equipped with the RP-5 Izumrud-5 radar with a maximum detection range against a four-engine bomber of 9.5km (5.1nm), while small twin-engine bombers, such as the Il-28, could be detected from 7.5km (4nm). The radar, however, proved ill-suited for the interception of targets flying below 3,000m (9,900 feet) due to ground clutter, and the minimum altitude of the fighter during intercepts was limited to 2,500m (8,200 feet).
