A Syrian MiG-17F shows the common colours and markings of the period. Even as Su-7s were introduced, these old jets remained the backbone of the SyAAF strike squadrons and saw action over the Golan Heights. The powerful cannon could serve for defence air-to-air, but Syria relied upon MiG-21s for intercept, as did Egypt. As in Sinai, the MiG-17 could race across the border and hit Israeli targets before hastening back north, often before being engaged by IAF fighters. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
