A reconstruction of an Egyptian MiG-17F operated out of Hodeida AB and encountered by a British military aircraft patrolling the Red Sea in 1964. Painted in two layers of a mix of clear lacquer and 5 percent aluminium powder, resulting in a livery known as ‘bare metal overall’ in the West, or ‘silvergrey’ in the Arab world, the aircraft with serial number 2402 was apparently seconded to Yemen from No. 18 Squadron UARAF, deployed at el-Arish AB on the Sinai Peninsula. It received a yellow bolt outlined either in blue or black, and six blue or black stars, on the front fuselage: it is possible that this was the unofficial insignia of an acro-jet team known to have flown MiG-17s in the late 1950s and early 1960s (See Arab MiGs, Volume 1, p.89, for details). Other interesting details include two banks of launch rails for Sakr unguided rockets, installed close to the wing-tips: by 1964, such installations were common on nearly all UARAF Yak-11s, MiG-15s and MiG-17s deployed in Yemen.
