The Douglas Dakota was used extensively by the RAF during the Second World War but by the Berlin Airlift, it was beginning to show its age. Cargo access on the Dakota (and C-47) was only via the side door, which limited its capability. The Dakota was gradually replaced in RAF service by bigger fourengined types such as the Avro York and the Handley Page Hastings. It was also operated by civilian contractors. The aircraft shown is Douglas Dakota Mk. 4 KN518 XK-Y of 46 Squadron RAF. When the aircraft underwent major maintenance, the drab camouflage was removed to save weight, leaving a bare metal finish.
