Douglas C-47 Skytrain |
Something like the ‘unsung heroes’ of the RHAF involvement in the Cyprus Crisis of 1963–1964 were the Douglas C-47 Dakota transports of the 355th Mira. This example – serial number 92-622 – is depicted as deployed by a flight of the 13th Squadron sent to support the UN forces in Korea; apparently, the livery of Greek Dakotas changed very little over the following 15 years. Most were left in bare metal overall, but had an ‘anti-glare panel’ and parts of the forward and rear under fuselage painted in black. The same dark blue used for application of their national insignia was used to apply the number 9 behind the rear cockpit and the band around the forward part of the engine nacelles. Most received full service titles down the upper part of the centre fuselage – all in black. This example also received the nickname ‘Neptune’. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
