F-100D 55-2950, 50th Tactical Fighter Wing, Hahn AB, West Germany - The 50th Fighter Bomber Wing transitioned from the North American F-86F Sabre to the F-100D at Toul-Rosières AB in France in 1957 and 1958. It was retitled the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) on 8 July 1958 and its squadrons moved to Hahn AB and Ramstein AB in West Germany from September 1958. The wing converted to McDonnell F-4C/D Phantoms from October 1966. The three squadrons of the wing were identified on its Super Sabres by different colour tail bands with stars, with blue with white stars for the 10th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS), yellow with black stars for the 81st TFS, and red with white stars on 417th TFS aircraft. F-100D 55-2950 carried all three unit’s markings however, as it was the aircraft assigned to the wing’s commanding officer, Colonel C Banbury, in 1958. Its buzz number was also modified to reflect the wing’s identity. The Super Sabre was written-off on 30 November 1960, while assigned to the 10th TFS, after running off the end of the runway at Hahn AB during an aborted take-off.
