REAF Spitfire Mk Vc serial number ER603 was one of the first acquired by Egypt. As such it retained the standardised, RAF-style camouflage in ocean grey and dark green, with mid-grey undersides. By 1948, its spinner was re-painted in white and green and the large code letter was removed from the rear fuselage, but the serial number ER603 was left in its position, on the fuselage band in Sky-S colour. Notably, the undersurfaces of the wing and centre fuselage were re-painted in black with a total of four universal bomb-carriers attached. While known to have been used as an operational trainer, there is no evidence that ER603 was deployed operationally during the Palestine War. Meanwhile, shown with a significant exhaust stain down the centre fuselage, it starred in the movie ‘A Girl from Palestine’, filmed at Helwan in summer and autumn of 1948. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
