The French-operated Spitfire LF.Mk IXs retained their original camouflage pattern in dark green and dark grey over with medium grey undersides, and the fuselage band in sky colour. Contrary to the TD202 shown above, this example – serial MK716 – belonged to the 5th Spitfire contract, ordered in 1940 and originally made as an F.Mk IX, equipped with the Merlin 61 engine. By the time, it was handed over to the GC II/7, it was upgraded to LF.Mk IX standard, but retained its fin-tips and the camera-port behind the cockpit. French Spitfires were gradually phased out from 1949 and replaced by Grumman F8F Bearcats. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
