Israel had been modifying Second World War-vintage Sherman tanks to avoid the high cost of procuring entirely new and fully modern tanks. After the Six-Day War these were mostly second-line vehicles, operated especially in reservist units. However, one upgrade already underway continued to generate more M-51s that some have called Super Shermans, or Ishermans. Along with substituting diesel engines and improved suspension, these were fitted with a French 105mm gun that required an extension to the rear of the turret. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
