The Royal Rhodesian Air Force originally acquired 18 English Electric Canberra B.Mk 2s and T.Mk 4s, and operated them with two units: Nos. 5 and 6 Squadrons, both based at New Sarum, in 1956. By 1977 all the surviving examples were concentrated within No. 5 Squadron, and all wore entirely new livery: this consisted of dark earth overall, with dark green on top surfaces applied along the standard RAF camouflage pattern for this type. Serials were either entirely removed, or – if still around – applied in black on the rear fuselage, or just on the nosewheel doors. Notable are attachments for (four) launch rails for HS.80 Sura rockets: this was a local modification introduced in the 1960s but rarely used in combat in the late 1970s. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
