Von Buttlar’s last active command, L 54 was a ‘u-class’ Zeppelin. Later airships like L 54 were similar in size to the previous ‘r-class’, but with drastic reductions in weight to enable raiders to climb above Britain’s improving aerial defences. Whereas L 30 had an empty weight of around 36 tons, L 54 weighed in at 25 tons. The black paint scheme was applied to reduce the effectiveness of searchlights. (Artwork courtesy of Don Hollway)
