F-101A 54-1475, 81st Tactical Fighter Wing, RAF Bentwaters, Suffolk - The first F-101 Voodoos for the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing were delivered on 4 December 1958 to replace Republic F-84F Thunderstreaks with its 78th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) based at RAF Woodbridge, and the 91st and 92nd TFSs at nearby RAF Bentwaters. A mix of F-101A and Cs were assigned, with most of the aircraft for the wing having previously served with the 27th TFW at Bergstrom AFB in Texas. F-101A 54-1475 was with the 81st TFW by 1961. The following year a central maintenance policy was implemented and all of the wing’s Voodoos were painted with three-colour tail markings. The 81st TFW received its first McDonnell F-4C Phantoms on 4 October 1965 and replaced its last Voodoos on 3 January 1966, after which they were ferried back to the United States (54-1475 in October 1965). It initially went to Shaw AFB in South Carolina before being re-assigned to the 154th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (TRS) of the Arkansas Air National Guard (ANG). The aircraft was one of 29 F-101As selected for conversion by Lockheed Aircraft Services as a RF-101G, being issued to the 165th TRS of the Kentucky ANG, based at Standiford Airport. It was retired to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, in August 1972, where it was destroyed by fire in February 1976.
