The F-89 Scorpion was designed to a 1945 requirement for an all-weather fighter with designs provided by several US manufacturers and the initial concept for a piston-engine type changed to incorporate two jets. Northrop received the contract to produce the F-89, although that was contested by losing contenders with the first flight taking place on 16 August 1948. The aircraft shown here is one of the 11 F-89A accepted by the Air Force with 49-2435 redesignated an NF-89 operated by the Proving Ground Command Center, Eglin AFB, Florida.
