Powered by the General Electric J47-GE-7 engine, the F-86A quickly turned into an iconic early jet fighter, known not only for its swept wing design, but exceptional manoeuvrability. Combined with its top speed of over 670mph (1,078km/h) this enabled it to play a crucial role as an air superiority fighter capable of countering the slightly superior Soviet MiG-15s. This was an F-86A of the 94th Fighter Squadron, 1st Fighter Group – the first unit to receive Sabres. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
