Between 1967 and 1978, Iran acquired a total of 224 McDonnell Douglas F-4D, F-4E, and RF-4E Phantom IIs and they formed the backbone of its fighter-bomber and reconnaissance fleets during the war with Iraq. All Iranian Phantom IIs wore a camouflage pattern standardised as ‘Asia Minor’, and consisting of tan (FS30400), brown (FS30140), and dark green (FS34079) on upper surfaces and sides, and light grey (FS36622) on undersurfaces. The F-4 family was compatible with a wide range of conventional bombs, a small selection of those most widely deployed by the IRIAF is illustrated here, including (from left to right): US-made Mk.82 general purpose bomb (with Mk.12 Snakeye retarding fins), British-made Hunting BL755 CBU, USmade M117s (on a triple-ejector rack under the inboard underwing pylon), SUU-30/A, CBU-57A/B, and CBU-59s.
