Sunderland Mk I, N6138, No.228 Squadron, Aboukir, July 1940 Even as late as July 1940, some Sunderland’s still wore their pre-war silver livery, like this aircraft from No.228 Squadron, which was then operating from Aboukir and Gibraltar. Only the toned down roundels and removal of the rudder serial show this is not a pre-war aircraft. Having formed at Pembroke Dock, No.228 Squadron originally moved to the Mediterranean before war broke out, briefly returning to the UK on the outbreak of war. The Sunderland Mk I was powered by Bristol Pegasus XXII radial engines.
