The Soviet Union operated four MiG-25RB reconnaissance aircraft, like this one, from Cairo West during 1971 and 1972. Wearing Egyptian markings, these conducted oblique and overflight photography of Israel and its dispositions in the occupied Sinai Peninsula. Their speed and altitude placed them beyond the reach of IAF interceptors while Israel and the USA sought alternative means of engaging the MiGs. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
