The most powerful addition to the LAAF arsenal of the early 1980s was the MiG-25PDS. Powered by improved Tumansky R-15 engines and equipped with N-005 Saphir-25 radar (which had a limited look-down/shoot-down capability), an IRST and R-60MK short-range AAMs, it was a significant improvement over the earlier MiG-25P. Around a dozen were operated by the Mitiga-based No. 1035 Squadron, LAAF, part of which was forward deployed at Ghurdabiyah/Syrte AB, in February March 1986. The insets show details of the MiG-25PDS’s main armament, including R-40TD (left) and R-40RD (centre) air-to-air missiles. (Tom Cooper)
