The Mirage 2000N was originally planned to replace the older Mirage IVs, and custom tailored for the nuclear strike role from low altitude only. Based on the design of the Mirage 2000B two-seat conversion trainer, it was first flown in 1986, and entered service in 1988. The first sub-variant, 2000NK1 (of which 30 were manufactured) was the last aircraft to enter service while still compatible with the AN.52. The ultimate sub-variant became the 2000N-K2, of which 45 were manufactured, and which was equipped with the ASAMP-A nuclear cruise missile, but also had the secondary conventional capability and a full defensive kit.
