Nuclear-armed Mirage IIIEs were followed into service by SEPECAT Jaguar A. This was a twin-engined tactical fighter-bomber developed in cooperation between France and Great Britain, that entered service in 1973. Only a year later, EC 1/7 Provence was declared operational not only on the new jet, but also on the AN.52 nuclear bomb. The unit was followed by the EC. 3/7 Languedoc in 1975 (one of which aircraft as of 1981 is illustrated here), and the EC. 4/7 Limousin in 1981. Ironically, while Jaguars were never assigned to the Force de frappe, they had a task directly related to that of Mirage IVs: their duty was to ‘clear the way’ for nuclear-armed strategic bombers. Thus, once the AN.52 was withdrawn from service, in 1981, they were re-armed with anti-radar missiles and electronic warfare systems. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
