In the mid-1980s, 11 surviving C-135Fs were upgraded to the KC-135FR standard through the installation of CFM International F108 turbofan engines. Around the same time the fleet – meanwhile not only involved in Mirage IVA-operations, but also in supporting tactical fighter-bombers during French military interventions in the Central African Republic, Mauritania, and Chad – received this livery in blue grey (FS35164) on upper surfaces and sides, and either aluminium or light grey on undersurfaces. This was the KC-135FR serial number 62-3574 (coded 31-CP), while operated by ERV 93 Bretagne in Chad of 1986. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
