While probably ordering 16–18 Aérospatiale SA.321GV Super Frelons (18 was the standard complement of every IrAF squadron of the mid- 1970s), Iraq is known to have received only 12, in two sub-variants. The early variant, equipped with the ORB.31 Heraclés radar, lacked floats and is illustrated here (the later version was equipped with the ORB.32 radar, some of the aerials for which were installed into floats, and will be shown in the next volume of this mini-series). All were painted in Celomer 1625 gris bleu moyen clair (light grey-blue) overall, with a camouflage pattern in grey-green similar to (thought lighter than) BS381C/283, and blue similar to deep saxe blue (BS381C/113) on top surfaces and sides, and large black panels around the engine exhausts. All Iraqi Super Frelons wore a double set of national markings on the fuselage sides. Fin flashes were usually applied over the variant designation and the construction number on the fin, while their known IrAF serials (always applied in black on the boom) were in the range 2020–2027.
