Coded M, this Soviet-built Il-28 was delivered to Egypt in late 1955 and was one of up to two dozen to survive the Suez War of 1956. As usual, it was painted in similar fashion to MiG-15s and MiG-17s, with a mix of 5 percent aluminium powder and clear lacquer overall. The resulting colour became known as ‘silver-grey’ in most of Arab air forces. By 1963, when it was deployed in Yemen, it had received a large unit insignia of No. 7 Squadron UARAF in the form of a large black bomb, with stylised wings and the ‘Eagle of Sallahaddin’ in yellow. Inset are typical weapons deployed by this type during the Yemen War, including (from left to right) a FAB-250M-46 bomb, FAB-100M-46 and FAB-50M-46. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
