The Ilyushin Il-28 twin-jet bomber was inducted into service with the Bulgarian Air Force in 1954. Three aircraft were taken on strength in the autumn of 1954 — including two bombers and one trainer with dual controls — assigned to a squadron with the 28th BAP, a bomber regiment stationed at Balchik, moving in 1955 to nearby Tolbukhin. There the jet bomber aircraft were transferred to the inventory of 26th RAP, a reconnaissance regiment, where the type continued to serve in both bomber and reconnaissance roles together with a fleet of 17 Tu-2Ts, ten Fw 58s, three Laz-7Ms and one Fi 156.
