| Transall C-160 - Transport Allianz C.160 Transall |
The 50 Transall C.160F manufactured for the French Air Force starting in 1964, were certainly the military aircraft that saw most action in the CAR since the 1970s. Beginning in 1977, Paris acquired 29 additional examples manufactured to a new standard as C.160NG (for Nouvelle Génération, ‘New Generation’). Half of them – including this example F204, coded CG-64, were configured as tanker aircraft, and saw extensive service in support of French operations in Chad, from the mid-1980s, well into 2000s. This C.160NG tanker from the 64th Transport Squadron (64ème Escadre de Transport, ET.64) is shown as in service in late the 1980s and early 1990s, still wearing the standardised camouflage pattern including gris bleu tres fonce (very dark grey) and gris vert fonce (dark green) on top surfaces and sides, and aluminium on undersurfaces.(Artwork by Tom Cooper)
