With Iran acquiring no fewer than 430 self-propelled artillery pieces of this type, the M109A1s were the most important element of artillery groups of its army. Its primary armament consisted of the 155mm M185 howitzer. All vehicles were originally painted in light olive green overall. Never refreshed during the war with Iraq, their colour frequently dilapidated into various shades of grey-green and sand. (Artwork by Peter Penev)
