The US-built M109A2 155mm self-propelled howitzer was longer ranged than the Abbot and threw a much heavier shell; it was therefore more often used in the general support indirect fire role. The M109 was common to most NATO nations and could employ a wide variety of ammunition types – even if not all were standard issue. As well as the common HE and smoke rounds, the DPICM ‘bomblet’ round could be fired, though this would seem to have been extremely rare in peacetime. In addition, a nuclear round could be fired, though these would have been held by special US units and used under ‘dual-control’ requiring consent of both the US and the nation owning the firing weapon.
