The American Curtiss SOC Seagull was a scout observation seaplane, which was introduced to the service in late 1935. At the beginning of the Pacific War, some cruisers still were equipped with Seagulls. Rear Admiral Smith used the seaplane during the bombardment of Kiska in August 1942. Later, the obsolete SOCs were replaced by the OS2U Kingfishers. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
