On 21 July 1995, in support of NATO’s operations in Bosnia, the German Luftwaffe deployed Einsatzgeschwader 1 (Task Force/Operational Wing 1) to Piacenza AB, in Italy. Consisting of up to 14 Tornado IDS and Tornado ECRs drawn from Jagdbombergeschwader 32 (Fighter-Bomber Wing 32) and Aufklärungsgeschwader 51 (Reconnaissance Wing 51), the unit had the task of protecting allied aircraft from Serbian radar-guided SAMs and flying reconnaissance. Depicted here is one of the Tornado ECRs of the EG.1, the insignia of which is visible on the side of the intake. The aircraft was painted in the then brand-new camouflage pattern ‘Norm ‘95’ consisting of three grey colours (FS35237, FS36320, and FS36375). The tip of the fin was painted in dark grey RAL 7012, and the radome in black. Barely visible on the fin is the low-visibility version of the JaBo 32’s crest (the full colour version of which is shown inset). Primary armament consisted of two AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles, two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles for self-defence, Cerberus ECM-pods (left outboard underwing pylon) and chaff and flare dispensers (right outboard underwing pylon).
