Generally, Avro Anson Mk Is deployed by the Royal Iraqi Air Force to Jordan and Syria during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948 were painted in silver dope overall. National insignia still covered the entire rudder and sloped down the line of the rudder hinge. Many had their dorsal gunner’s turret removed, and a clear astrodome immediately behind the cockpit still in place, as shown here. Unlike the Egyptian examples, their engine cowlings were smooth. National markings were applied in six positions, while many had their serial numbers – 181 in this case –
reapplied in much larger Arabic script than on other Iraqi examples. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
