On 15 January 1945, the RAF transferred three Avro Anson Mk XIIs – serial numbers MG911, NK5811 and NK583 – to the REAF. Two additional examples (NK271 and NK591) were thereafter transferred at an unknown, later date. At least one of them – probably the example shown here, in high-speed silver overall finish, and known to have worn its RAF serial NK581 until 1949 – was operated by the FTS at Almaza, for navigational training. All the Ansons in question had their upper gunner’s turret removed, but an astrodome and a streamlined radome/ aerial have been added. The Arabic name on the nose was almost certainly a location in Egypt, but available photographs are unclear to read with certainty: the artwork here shows the name as Suhag (Sohag).
