The Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (‘Oscar’, formally ‘Army Type 1 Fighter’) was a single-seater tactical fighter first used by the IJAAF since October 1941. Together with the Zero, it belonged to the last generation of light, easy to fly, highly manoeuvrable (but also lightly armed) combat aircraft. They proved highly popular in service for their pleasant flight characteristics and excellent manoeuvrability. Unsurprisingly, after Japan’s capitulation, numerous examples were adapted for service with the Gremlin Force at first. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
