In late 1990, rising tensions with the US-led Coalition prompted the IrAF to search for ways to improve the survivability of its MiG-23ML fleet. Correspondingly, several MiG-23MLs of No. 93 Squadron were equipped to carry Thomson-CSF TMV-002 Remora ECM pods. Furthermore, their avionics were enhanced through the installation of the SPO-15 radar warning systems on the fin, and ASO-2 chaff and flare dispensers on the top central fuselage. While the Remora proved effective against Iranian interceptors of the late 1980s, by 1991 it was no secret to the Western powers. Nevertheless, aircraft equipped in this fashion caused quite some confusion amongst US fliers in January 1991, when at least two were claimed shot down as ‘Mirage F.1EQ’ – obviously on basis of intelligence data only.
