The OT-62A was a slightly improved variant of the OT-62 TOPAS armoured personnel carrier, based on the Soviet-made BTR-50, and including no armament. Its spacious crew compartment had space for two crew and up to 18 passengers. Alternatively, it could serve as a command post and staff workplace, or for transporting personnel, various cargoes and material around the battlefield, and was also manufactured as the UMU mine layer, in ambulance and recovery vehicle sub-variants. This example was acquired by Iraq in the early 1970s and survived long enough to end its days while operated by the 45th Mechanised Infantry Division in southern Iraq in 1991, where it was destroyed by an AMX-30B2 main battle tank of the 4th Dragoon Regiment of the French Army, during Operation Daguet, the French component of Operation Desert Storm.
