201 Squadron was inaugurated at Hatzor AB as the first unit in the IAF to operate the F-4E Phantom IIs coming to Israeli initially in August 1969. Their first combat operation was on 9 October. The unit insignia on the tail would normally be covered for any public viewing or photography. Aircraft 08 is seen following its 11 November 1969 shootdown of an Egyptian MiG-21 on with an AIM-9B, the first ‘kill’ by a Phantom in Israeli service, for which a roundel has been added to the nose of the jet. The aircraft was big, complex, heavy to handle, and with a smoky exhaust, and not initially very popular with the Israeli pilots. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
