The Charlie I-class was the NATO reporting name for the Soviet Project 670 nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine (SSGN). A total of 11 units were built. They were the first class of Soviet submarines that could launch their eight SS-N-7s (NATO designated Starbright) anti-ship cruise missiles (ASM) while submerged. Between 1970 and 1973, four of the class deployed to the Mediterranean. In 1972, each of the three Charlie Is deployed in the Mediterranean for a 90-day period. (Artwork by Anderson Subtil)
