The Republic XF-91 Thunderceptor was another of several mixed-propulsion projects for interceptor aircraft during the late 1940s. It was planned to use a jet engine for cruise speed, and a cluster of four small rocket engines for climb and combat. Although two prototypes were constructed – the first equipped with radar and the second with the butterfly fin – the combination of rapid development of jet engines, short range (the endurance of the Thunderceptor was limited to some 25 minutes), and the design of their fuselages rendered them obsolete.
