At the peak of the Cyprus Crisis, in August 1964, the 111th Wing of the RHAF, home-based at Nea Anchialos, is known to have been ordered to prepare F-84F Thunderstreaks of its 338 and 339 Mira for action over the troubled island. The jets in question were all left in bare metal overall, but many wore ID-bands in yellow and blue around their front fuselage and the unit insignia (in this case that of the 338th Mira) behind the rear portion of the cockpit. Typical weapons load included two 460 US gallons drop tanks under inboard underwing hardpoints, a pair of AN/M64A-1 bombs 500lbs/250kg on outboard pylons and four unguided rockets 2.75in/70mm calibre (two under each wing) under the wingtips. To help them lift off, they received a tray with four JATO bottles underneath the rear portion of the centre fuselage. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
