One of first RHAF units activated in reaction to the Cyprus crisis was the 337th Mira, which was tasked with protection of the southern Aegean and the Dodecanese islands. For this purpose, the squadron regularly rotated pairs or fourships of North American F-86D Sabre Dog interceptors to Souda AB, sometimes also to Kasteli airfield, both on Crete. This is a reconstruction of one of the jets known to have been deployed: F-86D with the US FY-serial number 51-13398, which went into action while still wearing the original unit insignia on the fin (a ghost with two orange bombs, pointing at the squadrons nickname, ‘Fantasma’). Standard armament of 337 Mira’s Sabre Dogs during the crisis included a pair of GAR-8 infra-red homing air-to-air missiles (AIM-9B Sidewinder) on underwing pylon, and an internal launcher with 24 unguided rockets 2.75in/70mm calibre.
