The VNAF’s 61st Tactical Wing at Da Nang had on its strength a squadron each of F-5As and F-Es. They were reinforced by rotational detachments of F-5s from the 63rd Tactical Wing at Bien Hoa, including this rare F-5C of the 542nd Fighter Squadron in air defence configuration, armed with AIM-9B Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. The threat of air attacks carried out by North Vietnamese combat aircraft against the overcrowded airbase forced VNAF to maintain aircraft for combat air patrols on alert. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
