While withdrawing from service its old and worn-out Northrop F-5A/B Freedom Fighters, the Royal Moroccan Air Force continued flying Northrop
F-5E/F Tiger IIs. Through the 1990s and 2000s, they flew regular reconnaissance sorties over Western Sahara, usually equipped with Italian-made
ELT-555 ECM pods (shown installed on the underwing pylon) as a self-protection measure against SA-6 and SA-8 surface-to-air missiles operated by
the ELPS. Moroccan F-5E/Fs remained in service as of 2020–2022 and were in the process of being upgraded through the installation of Israeli-made
sensors and weaponry. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
