U-2A ‘NACA 163’ flew Mission 2023 from Wiesbaden on 10 July 1956, piloted by Glen Dunaway. Equipped with an ‘A’ camera, the 2,042-mile round trip took him over the GDR, Poland, into Soviet Ukraine, the Black Sea, returning via Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and the GDR again. The U-2A’s early natural metal finish was replaced by an overall dark blue from around mid-1957. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
