The first batch of Mi-24s deployed by the VKS to Syria consisted of Mi-24Ds and Mi-24Ps equiped with no advanced self-protection systems, often even lacking standard flare dispensers and L166V infra red jammers on the rear side of the engine cowling. All were camouflaged in two shades of green on top surfaces and sides, and a bright light blue on undersurfaces, and wore two-digit ‘Bort’ numbers applied in yellow. Registrations and service titles were removed on arrival at Hmeimim AB, and borts were subsequently often decreased to only one digit. They were replaced by a batch of Mi-24Ps painted in dark sand and olive green, some of which wore very large borts in red (outlined in white). More advanced Mi-35Ms, equipped with the GSh-23V twin-barrel 23mm cannon, Vitebsk self-protection system, and exhaust diffusers began appearing only later in 2016. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
