The Mikoyan and Gurevich MiG-15 jet fighter featured swept wings and vastly improved performance compared to its predecessor Yak-23, and was rushed in significant numbers to Bulgaria in 1952-54, initially to equip the three fighter regiments of the 10th IAD at Graf Ignatievo, and then two of the regiments of the 4th IAD at Dobroslavtsi, followed by the three regiments of the 1st IAD at Tolbukhin in 1955. The MiG-15 bore the brunt of countering the increased number of intrusions of unidentified aircraft into Bulgarian airspace coming from Turkey and Greece.
