One of the most numerous medium battle tanks of the Royal Moroccan Army deployed in the Western Sahara was the M48A3. The first of about
225 were delivered in 1973, and the last in 1987, by when most of the fleet was locally upgraded to the M48A5 standard, with help from US advisors.
Weighing around 45,000kg when loaded for combat, the A5 variant included the M68 105mm gun in place of the original 90mm calibre M41), a
metric-measurement M16 fire-control system, the more powerful AVDS-1750-2C RISE engine, and T142 tracks. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
