The first example of the YB-49, with its eight J35-A-15 engines and small but necessary vertical fins as the only impediment to Jack Northrop’s ideal flying wing format. This aircraft conducted a full, successful program of 144 flights for Northrop and USAF tests between October 21, 1947 and March 15, 1950, when it was destroyed during a high-speed taxi trial. The XB-47, which first flew two months after the YB-49, was 80mph faster, although the Flying Wing’s typical unrefueled range with a 10,000lb weapon load was 1,350 miles longer.
