The S-100 type was the most effective and most-produced S-Boot variant fielded by the Kriegsmarine, with its production being shared between Lürssen of Vegesack and Schlichting of Travemünde. Some 35 m in length, and displacing 110 tonnes, they were built with a partially armour-plated Kalottenbrücke (spherical bridge) that protected its occupants from both small arms fire and inclement weather. Introduced in 1943, the cupola was retrofitted to earlier S-Boote. This particular vessel carries the distinctive black panther insignia of 4. S-Bootsflottille. (Osprey Publishing)
