After landing near Wesel, on the Rhine River, on March 24, 1945, the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion troops and their comrades in the 6th British Airborne Division trekked some five hundred kilometres to Wismar, arriving on May 2 — just hours before the Soviet Red Army. The battalion suffered four casualties in a battle near Ricklingen on April 8. On April 15, they witnessed Nazi horrors in the newly liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
