| Coalition Aircraft vs Iraqi SAMs: Operation Desert Storm 1991 | 148 |
CBU-87/B COMBINED EFFECT MUNITION - Cluster bomb units were the preferred weapon of choice for Coalition aircraft tasked with knocking out SAM and AAA batteries and their attendant radar sites. The primary CBU used by the USAF and RAF was the CBU-87/B Combined Effects Munition, developed by Aerojet General/Honeywell and supplied to frontline units from 1986. Each CBU contained 202 BLU-98/B Combined Effects Bombs designed for employment against armor, troops and soft -skinned targets such as SAM/AAA batteries and radar installations. Some 10,035 CBU-87/Bs were dropped by the USAF and 387 by the RAF in Desert Storm/Granby, this example being shown with its high-drag canted fins extended – they popped out automatically shortly after the CBU was dropped from its carrier aircraft.
